Our Featured Scent of the Month
What’s orange, has a stem, and is a fall and Halloween staple? PUMPKINS! Do you want to hear a crazy fact? Each year in the US, farmers grow more than 1.5 billion pounds of pumpkin! That’s kind of incredible. Pumpkins have been around for over 5 thousand years in North America and they now grow in 6 out of the 7 continents, which is awesome considering they are rich in vitamins A and B, potassium, iron, and protein. With its rich history, yummy aroma and all it has going for it in the good-for-you department, why wouldn't we make a pumpkin scented scrub?!
Our all-natural pumpkin scrub is a huge hit with our pumpkin-loving customers. And we can’t back this up with science or anything, but us Simpies (a.k.a Simple Sugars employees) think it just might pack the biggest smoothness punch of all. Not convinced that you NEED this one yet? Here are a few more
- Pumpkins are loaded with beta-carotene. The orange color is indicative of high levels of this potent anti-oxidant and anti-oxidants are skin’s bffs.
- Pumpkins contain natural fruit enzymes that aid in exfoliation. So you get a kicked-up glow with our pumpkin scrub.
- The aroma of pumpkin is divine. The aroma of Simple Sugars all-natural, handmade pumpkin body scrub is beyond divine. It’s like comfort in a jar.

It’s time for fall! There are so many reasons we love this season—the beautiful weather, back to school and, of course, apple season!
Apples are a rich source of rejuvenating vitamins A, B, and C that can help your skin stay smooth, youthful, and glowing. These antioxidants can also provide protection from harmful UV rays.
Since it’s back to school time, we wondered why apples are often associated with teachers? Well, as it turns out, in the 1700s, teachers were poorly paid so grateful families in the US, Denmark, and Sweden would bring a baskets of apples to their childrens’ teachers. It has also been said that poor families would bring baskets of apples as payment for their child’s education. During this time, apples were considered special and expensive because they were hard to plant and harvest.
Fast forward and the apple tradition is still alive; however, it’s now a sign of respect to give an apple as a gift to the teacher. Sadly, it’s not currently acceptable to pay for your education with apples! In its most recent survey of college pricing, the College Board reports that a "moderate" college budget for an in-state public college for the 2012–2013 academic year averaged $22,261. That’s a lot of apples; about 1113 bushels as a matter of fact!
In any case, we’re celebrating Apple Season by bringing back our all-natural Granny Smith Apple Body Scrub! Remember, an apple a day, keeps the dry skin away! Maybe you could even bring an apple scrub to your favorite teacher :) Check it out here: http://simplesugars.myshopify.com/collections/body-scrubs/products/granny-smith-body-scrub
It is my humble opinion that if you wouldn't eat it - you shouldn't be putting it on your skin. Because what you put on your skin can get absorbed into your bloodstream. Now admittedly there is controversy over just how dangerous various chemicals actually are for you. Here's my take on it - WHY USE CHEMICALS IF YOU DON'T HAVE TO? Sure, maybe you're not going to drop dead after using a certain shampoo but it's something you do daily so why take a chance? JUST SAY NO to chemicals in your skincare. It's better for you and it's better for the earth. So with that I bring you the premier Evil Ingredient:
SODIUM LAUREL SULFATE/SODIUM LAURETH SULFATE
What are they? Well, technically a sulphate is a salt of sulphuric acid. In simpler terms, they are dangerous and highly irritating chemicals.
What do they do? Bascially, they make suds and lather. They are also grease strippers. So, you're likely to find this ingredient, often listed right after water ( which means it's the 2nd most prominent ingredient) in your shower gel, body wash, shampoo, hand soap, toothpaste and there's lots of it in Dawn dishwashing detergent. ( I can't even get near that stuff !) It's a very common ingredient because it's cheap and we, as consumers, like the suds.
Why are they bad for you? Sodium Laurel Sulfate is actually the more harsh of the two. Afterall, this ingredient was first used to remove grease from the floor of garages. It can be highly irritating to skin and mucosal membranes and is very drying. Obviously, very, very bad...

Simple Sugars position: Marketing Intern
School & major: Pitt - Marketing
Favorite Simple Sugars product: Almond body scrub
I was born and raised in the great Moon Twp., about 20 minutes outside of the city near the airport. I played soccer for a couple different teams through high school and during my junior year, accepted an offer to play at Pitt. Something about the luxurious neighborhood of South Oakland made it hard to resist being a panther. I’m about to enter my senior year at Pitt as a Marketing major in CBA and am a captain on the soccer team. During the spring semester, I applied for a marketing intern position at Simple Sugars because of the fun environment the business portrayed. After interviewing with Lani, I was thrilled to become a part of a great team, especially since Lani and Simple Sugars had been featured on Shark Tank (and all of the great things that came from the show!). I’m so thrilled to be a part of such an exciting time here at Simple Sugars and can’t wait to see what else this awesome business has in store!

Simple Sugars position: Somewhere between being the Scrub Chef Extraordinaire and the Sales and Marketing Assistant.
School & major: Chatham University alum (Marketing Degree)
Favorite Simple Sugars product: Can’t pick just one, but pomegranate is amazing.
I moved to PGH from Bridgeport, CT to study Musical Theatre and Drama at CMU. Halfway through my training I was told by doctors I’d never sing again. I had to find my way to a new passion, which I found in expressing myself through makeup artistry by running my own business. Shortly after transferring to Chatham University to study Marketing, I was selected to travel to Paris, France where I studied business, cosmetics and fashion. A year later, I was lucky enough to see Lani speak with my entrepreneurship class. Once I saw she was hiring for interns, I knew it was meant to be. They say everything happens for a reason, and I think I finally understand why I had to leave behind my love for singing.

Simple Sugars position: former PR intern/does a little bit of everything
School & major: Pitt – communications and psychology
Favorite Simple Sugars product: All of them! But especially the Rose Body Scrub
Hi everyone! My name is Brenna and I am currently a sophomore studying Communications and Psychology at the University of Pittsburgh. I came to Pittsburgh in 2011 with high hopes of one day becoming a lawyer. One semester and a couple political science classes later, and I quickly changed my mind and my major. I absolutely love living in Pittsburgh, but hope to someday move to New York City. I spend most of my free time with friends and one of our favorite things to do is cheer on the Pittsburgh Penguins. Other than that, I spend my time shopping, at the gym, or obsessively repainting my nails (usually some shade of pink or sparkles). There is a Simple Sugars scrub to match my every mood, but I would say my favorites are rose (super girly), green tea facial (to make my skin super smooth before putting on my makeup), and eucalyptus (super refreshing after the gym). After working as a PR intern for Simple Sugars in...
